Northern Division Inter-County Jamboree: The 2021 Story

Three weeks ago this evening, I was getting ready to head off to Monifieth the next morning for the Jamboree, one of the highlights of our County golfing calendar. I cannot believe that it’s so long ago. However, reflection is a valuable process ...

The 2021 Jamboree took place on Monifieth Links from Saturday 12 till Monday 14 June 2021. The event started with a practice round on the Friday when Team Aberdeenshire arrived in great spirits, raring to get started.

Back left to right: Jasmine Mackintosh, Carmen Griffiths (with her Sloth head cover),
Robyn Fowlie (with our Mascot Sloth), Sammy Fanthorpe
Front left to right: Karolina Martincova, Rachel Polson, Sheena Wood, Megan Robb

I’m sure you will have seen already on the website the daily and overall Jamboree results and the photographs. You will know that Aberdeenshire was runner-up to Perth & Kinross by a close margin. Nonetheless, Team Aberdeenshire was awesome and did ALCGA very proud. Here now is some of the story.

The Golf

Friday’s weather was fairly typical of all four days. It was WINDY, a gale at times. When the sun was shining – which it did quite frequently – it was reasonably warm. When the clouds came over – again frequently but with some stunning formations – it was very cold. Conditions were very tough.

Selector Zibby, Vice-captain Olive and I faced the taxing task of making decisions about who to play, which foursomes pairings, what order. It was hard because we had eight very strong players to choose from, all of whom more than deserved her place, most of whom had played in previous Jamborees – Sheena coming close to forty appearances - plus we had a couple of rookies in Karolina and Robyn. Carmen played in her third Jamboree and was awarded a County brooch.

Saturday’s match against Perth & Kinross saw us all square after the morning foursomes. Jasmine and Carmen had a great 7&5 win. In the afternoon singles, we lost narrowly 2.5 - 3.5. Sheena had a great 6&5 win. In the end, it came down to the last game on the last hole of the course with Megan losing by only one hole – she was so disappointed after battling so hard. So close … but we finished 4-5 down to Perth & Kinross.

On Sunday, in our match against Angus, we were one down after the morning foursomes. Jasmine and Carmen had another great win, this time beating their opponents 6&5. Coming from behind, Team Aberdeenshire rose to the afternoon’s challenge and won five out of the six games. Megan had a stunning 8&6 win to compensate for her Saturday’s disappointment. Winning 6-3 was a very good outcome against Angus.

On Monday, against Northern Counties, we had everything to play for. Perth & Kinross already had 4 match points, so we had to win. We also had to have our fingers tightly crossed that Angus would conquer over Perth & Kinross to force a 3 way tie on 4 match points each and, therefore, a count of individual game points. Whatever else, we had to win as many games as we could by as much as possible!

The morning went well and we were one game up after the foursomes. It was a 7&6 win today for Jasmine and Carmen. Sheena & Sammy dug their heels in kept their cool to win by 1 hole. Megan and Robyn fought hard and were really unlucky to go 1 hole down on the eighteenth when the opposition holed an unbelievably long putt to win the hole. Team Aberdeenshire girls gave their all in the afternoon singles and won 4 of the 6 games. Rachel triumphed 5&4. Robyn lost out very closely again on the eighteenth green after a fierce contest. A 6-3 win at the end of the day was a good score for us against Northern Counties.

Angus did their best for us too. They pulled out all the stops against Perth & Kinross and drew on 4.5 games each. With two wins and a draw, giving them 5 match points, Perth & Kinross won the trophy. With two wins, giving us 4 match points, Aberdeenshire was hard on the Perth & Kinross heels as runner-up. Congratulations to Perth & Kinross who retained the trophy from 2019.

Thanks …

Many thanks must be put on record.

First of all, thanks to our Jamboree and Monifieth hosts and helpers. Thanks to:

  • Jackie Brown, Angus LCGA Captain and her committee for organising the Jamboree and welcoming us all to such a successful, well run event
  • Monifieth Links for courtesy of the course, to the green keeping team for presenting the course in excellent condition, and to the starters for their friendly reception and helpfulness
  • Monifieth Golf Club who were our hosts and who, along with Grange & Broughty Golf Club, provided catering facilities
  • Club members who provided assistance
  • Liz Munro for being Jamboree referee
  • The owners and staff at The Station Hotel, Carnoustie, who were so accommodating of any requests we made, who looked after us very well, and who complimented us on being excellent hotel guests
Next, thanks to everyone behind the ALCGA endeavour. Thanks to:
  • Selector Zibby for her support in making team decisions, for her enthusiasm and encouragement to everyone, for embracing the role of official photographer, for her energy transmuting citrine crystal gifts, and for leading our team-building Pass the Pigs game which was a bonding experience for us and a puzzling spectacle for onlookers
  • Vice-captain Olive for her help with planning and selecting, and for her garden hospitality for our Friday team get-together
  • President Ros for being there every day as our number 1 supporter
  • Louise and Fiona for being reserves then supporters at Monifieth
  • all the other supporters – too many to mention by name but we were delighted to see past captains, presidents, selectors, and players, along with current team squad members, parents, other relatives, and friends – who made the trip to encourage and cheer our players, creating an impressive sea of yellow
  • Glenmuir Sales Manager Paul and Murcar Links Professional Gary for making sure we had our new team kit on time
Thanks would be incomplete without making the biggest thank you of all to our splendid players who put their hearts and souls into every aspect of the Jamboree – the golf, the rivalry, the friendship, the fun, the commitment, the mutual support - from the practice days at Meldrum House through their personal preparation to the matches at Monifieth. Very well done to each and every one of you. It was overwhelming to receive the team’s thank gift to me – very kind and very much appreciated.

The players with Captain Lorna, Vice-captain Olive, Selector Zibby and President Ros

Final Comment …

Having missed out on our 2020 Jamboree because of the pandemic, it was such a pleasure to be part of this year’s competition. It was competitive, fun, tense, exciting, inspiring … and so many other things too. The standard of golf was amazing. We are very fortunate to have so many talented players in Aberdeenshire. The good natured spirit of camaraderie and competitiveness in which all games were played was a credit to all the Counties and their Captains.

Congratulations again to Perth & Kinross on their win. We wish them well when they head to Forres Golf Club at the end of August to represent the Northern Division in the Scottish County Finals. Very good luck … play well.

And, of course, congratulations to the 2021 Jamboree runners- up.

Northern Division Inter-County Jamboree: Monifieth Here We Come …

The Jamboree takes place this coming Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 12-14 June 2021, on Monifieth Links Medal Course. Anticipation and excitement are mounting ...

During May, at the County Championship and at the squad team building/practice days, Selector Zibby, Vice-captain Olive and I had the opportunity to watch the golfing qualities of the 12 girls/ladies who were available to play at the Jamboree. Each one of them demonstrated that she was a commendable potential team member.

Although we do not have to declare officially our nominated players until 30 minutes before the first tee time on Saturday, I can tell you now that our selected team (alphabetically by surname) is:
  • Sammy Fanthorpe
  • Robyn Fowlie
  • Carmen Griffiths
  • Jasmine Mackintosh
  • Karolina Martincova
  • Rachel Polson
  • Megan Robb
  • Sheena Wood
Our reserves – who are on standby until Saturday morning – are:
  • Louise Anderson
  • Fiona Campbell
Congratulations, Team Aberdeenshire.

For those who are unaware, the format of the Jamboree is this. The four counties of the Northern Division – Aberdeenshire, Angus, Perth & Kinross, Northern Counties - compete for a place in the Scottish County Finals to be held this year at the end of August at Forres. On a round robin basis, each day each county plays against another, with 3 two ball foursomes matches taking place in the morning, and 6 singles matches in the afternoon. The schedule is:

Saturday
8.30am - morning foursomes
1.30pm - afternoon singles
  • Angus v Northern Counties
  • Perth & Kinross v Aberdeenshire
Sunday
8.30am - morning foursomes
1.30pm - afternoon singles
  • Perth & Kinross v Northern Counties
  • Aberdeenshire v Angus
Monday
8.15am - morning foursomes
1.15pm - afternoon singles
  • Aberdeenshire v Northern Counties
  • Angus v Perth & Kinross

Because of ongoing coronavirus pandemic restrictions, there will be no caddies allowed this year. However, supporters/spectators will be very welcome and are urged to come and watch excellent golf, played in a suitably friendly but fiercely competitive spirit.

To ease potential congestion, teams have been assigned to two different Golf Clubs. Aberdeenshire and Northern Counties will be based at Grange & Broughty; Angus and Perth & Kinross will be at Monifieth. Due to uncertainty about the extent of catering availability in the clubhouses, visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic if possible.

Here's hoping that the good weather continues for us. Sun cream and insect repellent (although hopefully there won't be too many beasties about) as well as face masks and hand sanitiser will be in everyone’s bags. We will all have to be very careful about covid safety and social distancing.

Our President Ros emailed me saying, “What an excellent team we have for Monifieth, and very worthy reserves too. Congratulations to everyone! We are so fortunate to have such talented girls to represent Aberdeenshire. Looking forward very much to an enjoyable Jamboree.” I’m sure we all share Ros’s sentiments.

Hoping to see you there to be part of the thrill, the fun and the spectacle.

Watt Duffus: The 2021 Story

A week and a half after the event, here is the short story of the 2021 Watt Duffus Competition that took place at Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club on Monday 17 May when Murcar Links 1 were the victors.

The Golf

Twenty teams from fifteen different clubs took part – a super turnout. It was a bright blustery morning, with the wind providing a significant challenge but the sun keeping it from being too cold. However, later in the day when the sun dipped, it was very cold and several ladies came in looking bluer than the sky.

The course was in very good order. The greens were fast, true and testing. For those who had time to take in the scenery, it was beautiful with the dunes, the beach, the sea, and the yellow whins in the vicinity.

Golf was enjoyed and played in suitably competitive spirit. Scores generally were high because of the weather conditions. Deserving winners emerged. Full results can be seen under Fixtures on this web page. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, there was no official prize giving with photographs. However, when we receive winners’ photos, we will share them with you.

The Mrs Watt Duffus Trophy for Best Team Scratch Score was retained and taken home for the second year running by Murcar Links 1 (Jasmine Mackintosh, Rachel Polson, Sammy Fanthorpe, Donna Pocock), who finished far in the lead with a gross 233, appreciably outplaying all others. Congratulations, Team Murcar Links 1.

Deeside 1 (Susie MacLeod, Thelma Beattie, Anne Harper, Suzanne Middleton) won the Handicap Trophy for the Best Team Nett Score with a very well-achieved total of 224. Congratulations, Team Deeside 1.

ALCGA Captain Lorna (Johnson) grabbing an opportune moment to present the Team Handicap Trophy to Susie with Susanne (left) and Thelma (right) looking on.

Jasmine Mackintosh (Murcar Links 1) won the Mrs J P Kennaway Cup for the Best Individual Scratch Score with a most notable gross par 72. Congratulations, Jasmine.

Fenneke Wolters-Sinke (Aboyne) won the Individual Handicap Trophy for the Best Individaul Nett Score with an excellent nett par 72. Congratulations, Fenneke.

Thanks …

Many thanks must be put on record.

First of all, thanks to Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club. Thanks to:
  • the Club Council for granting ALCGA courtesy of the course, a very generous contribution with 80 rounds of golf taking place
  • Club Manager Paul Manson for his substantial support and help in making arrangements to ensure smooth running of our event and for his assistance on the day
  • the green keeping team for their efforts in presenting the course in great condition
  • The View restaurant team for their catering and hospitality.

Next, thanks to various ALCGA officials and members. Thanks to:
  • Management Committee members Susie (MacLeod) and Louise (Anderson) for coordinating and making advance plans to guarantee that the day would run efficiently: thanks too for their commitment throughout the long day of the event.
  • President Ros (Roy) for her dedication to the starter’s role and for welcoming all players to the chilly first tee
  • Honorary Secretary Karen (Stalker) for dealing with entries, the draw, scoring and results, in particular for getting all competitors briefed and ready to use VMS – an impressively successful venture.

Final Comment …

It was exciting to have so many County ladies back in action at this always popular fixture. I think that the format of the competition with its team and individual elements makes it especially interesting and appealing. Above all, it’s just terrific to be back seeing everyone in person.
Next team opportunity is the Tri-am at Oldmeldrum Golf Club on Friday 09 July. Hope to see you there.

County Championship: The 2021 Story

I can’t believe it is now eleven days since the prestigious 2021 County Championship ended with Rachel Polson taking home the trophy. Here is the story of how she and other trophy winners got there ...

Vice-captain Olive, Runner-up Robyn, President Ros, Captain Lorna, Champion Rachel

The 2021 County Championship took place at Meldrum House from Friday 30 April until Sunday 02 May.

The Golf

For the Qualifying Round on Friday, the weather brought a day of all seasons – brief sunshine, lots of cloud, wind, bitter coldness, some rain, and a hail shower. Scores reflected the tough weather conditions and the fact that Meldrum House posed a challenging test of golf. In particular, many players found the large, contoured, relatively fast greens very tricky. Perhaps local knowledge of the greens helped five home players to make it the next rounds! Rachel Mathieson (Hazlehead) posted an impressive score of 74 to take leading qualifier position.

Congratulations, Rachel

On Saturday, the Scratch and Handicap match play stages commenced. It was disappointing that current Covid protection levels and restrictions meant that we had to disallow caddies and spectators. However, officials, in particular those of us with the team squad in mind, observed much outstanding golf. Matches were played in great competitive spirit and deserving winners emerged. Full results can be seen under Fixtures on this web page.

Sunday morning saw the final match of the Handicap Trophy with Elaine Pirie (Meldrum House) beating Melanie Clark (Hazlehead) 5&3.

Congratulations, Elaine

The semi-finals of the Championship event also took place on Sunday morning. Both matches were very close. Robyn Fowlie (Forfar) narrowly beat Rachel Mathieson at the 19th, and Rachel Polson (Murcar Links) narrowly beat Carmen Griffiths (Aboyne) 2&1.

Congratulations, Rachel and Carmen, the semi-finalist trophy winners

The stage was set for Sunday afternoon with both Robyn and Rachel  competing in the Championship final for the first time. It was a hard fought match, all square until the 5th where Robyn went one up until Rachel brought it back to all square at the 6th. Rachel birdied the 9th to be one up at the turn until Robyn brought it back to all square with a birdie at the 11th. Rachel birdied the 12th, holed a long putt to birdie the 14th then started to creep away from Robyn. It was a pity that so few of us witnessed the display of excellent golf that ended with Rachel gaining victory at the 16th hole.

Congratulations to finalists Robyn and Rachel in the sunshine beside the 16th green

In Alan Brown’s page in last Tuesday’s Evening Express, Rachel gave her account of her Championship experience. These comments stood out for me:

“I don’t feel as though there is any pressure on me to perform well all of the time any more and my mindset has definitely changed for the better on the course. That being said, I knew this could be the first and only time I reached the final, never mind win it. I had to give myself a bit of a ‘talking to’ and managed to win 14th, 15th and 16th to win the match 4&2.”

“Obviously, I’m absolutely delighted with the win … and a little shocked.”

I don’t think we are shocked, Rachel, and we are definitely delighted for you.

Congratulations, Champion Rachel

Thanks …

Many thanks must be put on record.

First of all, thanks to Meldrum House. Thanks to:
  • Owners and Directors, in particular Chairman Bob Edwards, for granting ALCGA courtesy of the course, a very significant contribution with 98 rounds of golf taking place over the three days
  • Golf Manager David Mann for his significant support and help in making arrangements to ensure smooth running of our event and Professional Iain Donaldson for his day-to-day assistance
  • Course Manager Kenny Harper and Head Greenkeeper Stewart Addison and their team for their efforts in presenting a beautiful course in excellent condition
  • Lesley Morrison and the catering team for their hospitality
  • Club Vice Captain Mark Kelly for being starter on a very cold Friday morning
  • Club member Liz Barrack for her help on qualifying day
  • Club Captain Scott Mackay – assisted by his daughter Maisy - for refereeing the Championship final.

Next, thanks to various ALCGA officials and members. Thanks to:
  • Honorary Secretary Karen (Stalker) who refereed the Handicap Final, who deals with entries, the draws, scoring and results, and who decided this year to embark on using Scottish Golf’s VMS (Venue Management System) which required all players’ details to be checked and input so that scores could be processed and published, including live leader boards – quite an achievement – congratulations and huge thanks, Karen
  • President Ros (Roy) for her commitment to welcoming all players to the very cold first tee on Friday and to officiating when prizes were awarded
  • Management Committee member Fiona (Campbell) for her help
  • Selector Zibby (Brown) and Vice-captain Olive (Robb) for talent spotting with me
  • all competitors who, of course, are at the heart of the Championship success story.

Final Comment …

We are very fortunate in Aberdeenshire to have so many enthusiastic, supportive and gifted golfers. Our County Champion is always worthy of the accolade, with Rachel Polson taking that 2021 honour.

The Championship always provides a great opportunity to see many of our potential Jamboree team members in action. We were not disappointed by the standard of golf in 2021.

County Juniors: NEWSFLASH - 09 May 2021

Exciting morning … I watched the first Juniors’ competition of 2021 starting this morning at Murcar Strabathie. It was a delight to watch 6 girls tee off, not just because they all played beautiful shots but because it is several years since we have had such a big junior field. As well as our junior stalwarts Rachel and Robyn, today we welcomed Alice, Beth, Holly, and Ruby.

Sammy Fanthorpe, ALCGA Junior Secretary, has worked hard to make contact with all the young players, to motivate them to be part of our County community, to plan and run the competition. Thank you, Sammy - and your helpers Donna (Pocock) and Louise (Anderson).

Other thanks … Thanks to Murcar Links Golf Club for courtesy of the course. Thanks to Honorary Secretary Karen (Stalker) for setting up the competition for scoring on VMS. Thanks to the girls’ parents for their encouragement and support. Thanks to the competitors - an essential part of the event.

I look forward to hearing all about the golf later today.

County Championship: Congratulations

Champion Rachel

Huge congratulations to Rachel Polson of Murcar Links who became our 2021 ALCGA County Champion when she won 4&2 against Robyn Fowlie of Forfar in a match that was fiercely contested by both players who played excellent golf.

Rachel (right) and Robyn (left)

Accompanied by similar comments, congratulations too to Elaine Pirie of Meldrum House who secured the 2021 ALCGA Handicap Championship by winning 5&3 in her match against Melanie Clarke of Hazlehead.

Elaine (right) and Melanie (left)

You will have to wait till later in the week to read more of the Championship story. I feel really tired and need my bed soon – and I haven’t played any golf, unlike the ladies above who have played 4 or 5 rounds in 3 days!!

Once again – congratulations to our champions and runners-up.

Northern Division Inter-County Jamboree: NEWSFLASH

Exciting announcement … I can confirm that the Northern Division Inter-County Jamboree is going ahead at Monifieth Golf Links from Saturday 12 – Monday 14 June.

The County Captains from Angus, Perth & Kinross, and Northern Counties join me in sharing this great news. The winning team will represent the Northern Division in the Scottish County Finals at Forres at the end of August. Competition for that place will be fiercely contested at the Monifieth Jamboree.

I will be in touch with potential team members very soon to check availability and to arrange team building and practice sessions. Selector Zibby, Vice-captain Olive and I look forward to facilitating these at Meldrum House.

Here are a few early pieces of information:
  • Single occupancy rooms for the team and officials are booked at the Station Hotel, Carnoustie.
  • Aberdeenshire will be based at Grange and Broughty Golf Club.
  • There will a practice round in the early afternoon of Friday 11 June.
  • There will be no caddies during the Jamboree.
  • Spectators will be welcome – but clubhouse facilities may be limited due to ongoing Covid restrictions – there may be a suggestion to bring a picnic.

County Championship: The Draw

The draw for the County Championship is now available within the list of 2021 Fixtures here on the website. It is preceded by guidance for entrants on “Maintaining a Covid Safe Environment” while they are taking part in the competition.

As you know, our Championship at Meldrum House Golf Club starts the ALCGA season this coming Friday. I am wishing for some lovely weather to complement the excellent condition of my home course. Our secretary Karen and our selector Zibby were my guests there today. We all agreed that the course is looking fantastic, the greens are great and pretty fast for this time of year. We have our fingers crossed for sunshine, hopefully no rain, and maybe just a moderate breeze to keep the golfing challenge alive. There is no doubt that Meldrum House will present a good test of golf and an enjoyable experience for all. Because of the pandemic, there was no Championship last year, so the event is all the more exciting this year.

It is a pity that we are not having caddies, supporters and spectators but we must be cautious as we start to move out of lockdown and continue to adhere to ongoing Covid restrictions.

Undoubtedly, the Championship will be fiercely contested by the field of 56 members and some excellent golf will be on display. Whilst some players will aspire to be County Champion, others will have their sights on the Handicap Trophy. Good luck to all the competitors.

Fixtures Update: 23 April 2021

More unfortunate news, I’m afraid …

The Aboyne Club Rep was in touch earlier today to tell us that her Club has had to make the tough decision to postpone the County Open on 06 May. Like the Banchory greens, the Aboyne greens are taking an exceptionally long time to recover from the severe effects of the icy weather conditions that persisted over past weeks and months.

Everyone at Aboyne is very disappointed. I know that their disappointment will be shared by County members who were going to enter the competition in the town on Deeside that often boasts best temperatures.

The event will be re-scheduled. When confirmed, the date will be published in the website list of fixtures.

It looks as if the end of the season is going to be busier than usual … We’ll be looking for good scores after plenty time to practice!

Take care

Fixtures Update: 19 April 2021

You may have noticed already on the list of 2021 Fixtures here on the website that the Banchory County Open has been postponed.

I am sure that many members are disappointed by this news, as are the Banchory County rep and her Club colleagues who had to make the decision. Because they wanted to ensure that their visitors would have the best golfing experience, they had to respond to the fact that their greens have suffered from prolonged icy conditions, and that covid restrictions are continuing to have some impact on arrangements.

Thursday 16 September was chosen as the re-scheduled date rather than a day in July when several other County events take place.

However, looking on the bright side, it’s something to look forward to later in the season …

New ALCGA County Team Selector

I am delighted to announce that Zibby Brown (on the right) has accepted my invitation to be our County team selector.

Zibby is replacing Laura McLardy who stood down last year. It was disappointing for Laura to miss out on the opportunity to end her second term in the role with a successful Jamboree – and optimistically County Finals. I also lost out on the chance to learn more by working alongside Laura, benefitting from her substantial knowledge and experience of selecting, including when Aberdeenshire won the Scottish finals at Kilmacolm in 2018. Thank you, Laura.

Zibby has played golf for a long time, having grown up in St Andrews. She has loved golfing over the years on different courses. Currently she is a member at Aboyne Golf Club.

Zibby has not played County golf for a few years now due to work commitments. However, in the past she has thoroughly enjoyed being part of it. She will always look back fondly on the time when she was fortunate enough to be selected to play in our Jamboree team at Blairgowrie.

Now Zibby is looking forward to becoming re-acquainted with ladies she has known over the years, meeting more members of the County community, and embarking on the challenge of her selector role.

Welcome to the ALCGA leadership team, Zibby.
