Northern Division Inter-County Jamboree: Monifieth Here We Come …

The Jamboree takes place this coming Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 12-14 June 2021, on Monifieth Links Medal Course. Anticipation and excitement are mounting ...

During May, at the County Championship and at the squad team building/practice days, Selector Zibby, Vice-captain Olive and I had the opportunity to watch the golfing qualities of the 12 girls/ladies who were available to play at the Jamboree. Each one of them demonstrated that she was a commendable potential team member.

Although we do not have to declare officially our nominated players until 30 minutes before the first tee time on Saturday, I can tell you now that our selected team (alphabetically by surname) is:
  • Sammy Fanthorpe
  • Robyn Fowlie
  • Carmen Griffiths
  • Jasmine Mackintosh
  • Karolina Martincova
  • Rachel Polson
  • Megan Robb
  • Sheena Wood
Our reserves – who are on standby until Saturday morning – are:
  • Louise Anderson
  • Fiona Campbell
Congratulations, Team Aberdeenshire.

For those who are unaware, the format of the Jamboree is this. The four counties of the Northern Division – Aberdeenshire, Angus, Perth & Kinross, Northern Counties - compete for a place in the Scottish County Finals to be held this year at the end of August at Forres. On a round robin basis, each day each county plays against another, with 3 two ball foursomes matches taking place in the morning, and 6 singles matches in the afternoon. The schedule is:

Saturday
8.30am - morning foursomes
1.30pm - afternoon singles
  • Angus v Northern Counties
  • Perth & Kinross v Aberdeenshire
Sunday
8.30am - morning foursomes
1.30pm - afternoon singles
  • Perth & Kinross v Northern Counties
  • Aberdeenshire v Angus
Monday
8.15am - morning foursomes
1.15pm - afternoon singles
  • Aberdeenshire v Northern Counties
  • Angus v Perth & Kinross

Because of ongoing coronavirus pandemic restrictions, there will be no caddies allowed this year. However, supporters/spectators will be very welcome and are urged to come and watch excellent golf, played in a suitably friendly but fiercely competitive spirit.

To ease potential congestion, teams have been assigned to two different Golf Clubs. Aberdeenshire and Northern Counties will be based at Grange & Broughty; Angus and Perth & Kinross will be at Monifieth. Due to uncertainty about the extent of catering availability in the clubhouses, visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic if possible.

Here's hoping that the good weather continues for us. Sun cream and insect repellent (although hopefully there won't be too many beasties about) as well as face masks and hand sanitiser will be in everyone’s bags. We will all have to be very careful about covid safety and social distancing.

Our President Ros emailed me saying, “What an excellent team we have for Monifieth, and very worthy reserves too. Congratulations to everyone! We are so fortunate to have such talented girls to represent Aberdeenshire. Looking forward very much to an enjoyable Jamboree.” I’m sure we all share Ros’s sentiments.

Hoping to see you there to be part of the thrill, the fun and the spectacle.
